Abstract  Abstract

A method for decoding, by chain reaction, a chain reaction code, the chain reaction code having a plurality of output symbols (230, 720, 920) and a plurality of symbols (220, 710, 910) of origin, in which each exit symbol is associated with one or more origin symbols, the exit symbols associated with one or more origin symbols being called exit symbols of degree one or more, in which at least one exit symbol is associated with the at least two origin symbols, the output symbols associated with two or more origin symbols being called exit symbols of degree two or more, and in which at least one origin symbol is marked as active, and the chain reaction codes being such that an origin symbol can be decoded from an output symbol of degree one, and the decoding of an origin symbol reduces the degrees of the exit symbols that are associated with that decoded origin symbol, the procedure comprising: (0) determining that no exit symbol within the chain reaction code is associated with only one origin symbol; (i) select (321) one of the active source symbols that is associated with an output symbol of degree two or more; (ii) inactivating (322) the selected origin symbol that is associated with the output symbol of degree two or more, where (ii) inactivating the selected origin symbol produces an inactivated origin symbol and one or more recoverable origin symbols, in where each symbol of recoverable origin is associated with an exit symbol of degree one, where the degree is determined as specified above, but considering the symbol of origin inactivated as decoded; (iii) retrieve the values of said one or more inactivated origin symbols; and (iv) determine, based on the values recovered from said one or more inactivated origin symbols, the values of one or more recoverable origin symbols.
