Abstract
An audio encoder comprising a background noise estimator (12) configured to continuously update a parametric background noise estimate during an inactive phase (24) based on an input audio signal; an encoder (14) for encoding the input audio signal in a sequence of data during the active phase; and a detector (16) configured to detect the input of an inactive phase (28) following the active phase (24) based on the input audio signal, where the audio encoder is configured to, upon detecting the input of the inactive phase, encode in the data sequence the estimation of parametric background noise as it is continuously updated during the active phase to which the detected inactive phase occurs.
