Abstract  Abstract

A method and apparatus for measuring time associated with a satellite data message. A method and apparatus for measuring a time associated with a satellite data message used in a satellite positioning system (SPS). In one method, a first record of at least a portion of the satellite data message is received at the physical entity, typically a base station. The first record is compared to the second record of the satellite data message. The first record and the second record are at least partially overlapped in time. The time is determined from this comparison. This time indicates when the first record (or the source from which the first record was obtained) was received at a remote entity, typically a mobile SPS receiver. Various other methods of the invention are described, as well as various devices of the invention. The method and apparatus measures the date and time using the SPS signal without reading satellite data messages transmitted as data in these signals. The method and apparatus are suitable for situations where the received signal level is too weak to read satellite data messages.
