Abstract  Abstract

The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for measuring time associated with satellite data messages for use in a satellite positioning system (SPS). In one method, a first record of some or all of the satellite data messages is received at an entity, which entity is generally a base station. A first record is compared with a second record of the satellite data message, wherein the first record and the second record overlap in part or in whole in time. A time is determined from the comparison, the time indicating when the first record (or the source from which the first record is obtained) is received at a remote entity that is typically a mobile SPS receiver. Various other methods and apparatus of the present invention are described. The method and apparatus measure time using an SPS signal without reading satellite data messages transmitted as data within the signals. The method and apparatus are suitable for environments where the received signal level is too weak to allow reading of the satellite data message.
