Abstract  Abstract

A method and apparatus for communicating information using a plurality of dictionaries is described. A method and apparatus for communicating information using a plurality of reporting dictionaries is described. Multiple reporting dictionaries are implemented for use by wireless terminals in connection with multi-bit uplink transmission backlog request reports communicated via a dedicated control channel. Each dictionary defines different bit mapping interpretations for a set of multi-bit uplink transmission backlog request reports, eg, 3-bit uplink request reports and 4-bit uplink request reports. The plurality of request dictionaries include a default dictionary and an additional dictionary. The implementation of multiple alternative request dictionaries expands reporting possibilities and allows wireless terminals to use a reporting format that is very suitable for their current needs. The default dictionary is required to be used under certain predetermined conditions, for example, when it becomes active. The rules for moving between different dictionaries and continuing to use the selected dictionary are described. (Selection) Figure 76A
