Abstract  Abstract

A method for establishing an extended security context between a remote station and a serving network is disclosed. In this method, the remote station forwards a first message to the serving network that includes an information element notifying that the remote station supports an extended security context. The remote station uses the information element to generate at least one session key according to the extended security context. In response to the first message, the remote station receives a second message having an indication that the serving network supports an extended security context. The remote station protects wireless communication with at least one session key in response to the second message.
