A new and improved method for implementing a high rate transfer air interface is disclosed. The transmission system provides an in-phase channel set 90 and a quadrature channel set 92. In-phase channel set 90 is used to provide a full set of orthogonal intermediate rate control and traffic channels. The quadrature channel set 92 is used to provide a fast set of channels and an extended set of intermediate rate channels that are orthogonal to each other and to the original intermediate rate channel. The fast auxiliary channel is created over a set of medium rate channels using short channel codes. Medium rate channels are created using long channel code sets.
