Abstract  Abstract

An authentication method for authenticating a mobile node to a packet data network is disclosed wherein the shared secret for the mobile node and the packet data network is prepared using the shared secret of the mobile node and the telecommunication network authentication center . In the method, the mobile node transmits its subscriber identity to a packet data network together with a replay attack protector. The packet data network obtains authentication triplets, uses them to generate a session key, and retransmits it to mobile node challenges and cryptographic authenticators. The mobile node generates the remainder of the authentication triplets using the challenges and generates the session key. With the session key, the mobile node can check the validity of the encryption authenticator. If the authenticator is legitimate, the mobile node transmits to the packet data network a cryptographic response generated using the session key to authenticate itself to the packet data network.
