Abstract  Abstract

An authentication method for authenticating a mobile node with a packet data network is disclosed, wherein the shared secret for the mobile node and the packet data network is prepared using the shared secret of the mobile node and the telecommunication network authentication center. . In this method, the mobile node sends its subscriber identity along with the replay attack protector to the packet data network. The packet data network obtains authentication triplets, uses them to generate a session key, and sends back to mobile node challenges and cryptographic authenticators. The mobile node uses the challenges to generate the remainder of the authentication triplets and to generate the session key. With the session key, the mobile node can check the validity of the cryptographic authenticator. If the authenticator is legitimate, the mobile node sends an encrypted response generated using the session key to the packet data network to authenticate itself to the packet data network.
