Abstract  Abstract

A method of supervising the forward link in a high speed data system is disclosed. The base station transmits to the access terminal on the forward traffic channel only if the base station has data to send to the access terminal. The base station periodically sends a configuration packet to its access terminal to minimize the worst case of having to re-request the traffic channel resource following the release. The configuration packet indicates the allocation state of the traffic channel belonging to the base station. If the access terminal receives a configuration packet indicating that one or all traffic channels have been deallocated, the access terminal immediately stops using that traffic channel. If the access terminal does not successfully decode the configuration packet for a certain time, the access terminal releases the connection with all base stations and associated traffic channels.
