Abstract  Abstract

TELECOMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM, AND, PROCESS TO ALLOW A TELECOMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM TO OFFER PARALLEL LOCATION SERVICES TO EXISTING SERVICES WITHIN A GENERAL PACKAGE RADIO SERVICE SYSTEM (GPRS). A telecommunications system and process are exposed to allow a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) node, that is, a Service GPRS Support Node (SGSN) within a cellular network, to be able to handle requests for Location (LCS) for a mobile GPRS (MS) station in parallel to other existing transactions such as delivering short messages or engaging in session management activity, for example, data call connection. A new type of LCS transaction can be introduced in the GPRS Connection Management (CM) sublayer at SGSN and GPRS MSs to operate orders for LCS in parallel to other services offered. LCS can be multiplexed along with other existing functions in GPRS by allocating a new Service Access Point Identifier (SAPI) for LCS within the GPRS Logical Link Control (LLC) sublayer. Alternatively, when a common LLC SAPI is used between different CM sublayer functions, then a different protocol discriminator (PD) can be allocated to LCS.
