Abstract  Abstract

A GPRS mobile station in parallel with other existing transactions, such as, for example, data call connections, to which a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) node, a serving GPRS support node (SGSN) in a cellular network, carries short messages or is involved in session management activities. A telecommunications system and method are disclosed for enabling processing of a request for location service (LS) for (MS). The new LCS transaction type can be introduced in the connection management (CM) sublayer of the SGSN and GPRS MSs GPRS to handle requests for LCS in parallel with other services provided. By assigning a new Service Access Point Identifier (SAPI) to the LCS in the Logical Link Control (LLC) sublayer of GPRS, the LCS can be multiplexed along with other existing functionality of GPRS. Alternatively, when a common LLC SAPI is used between different CM sublayer functions, different protocol identifiers (PDs) may be assigned for the LCS.
