Abstract  Abstract

(57) (Summary) A general packet radio service (GPRS) node, such as a GPRS support node (SGSN), housed in a cellular network will be deployed in parallel with ongoing transactions such as short message distribution and data connection management functions. Disclosed are telecommunications systems and methods capable of handling location service (LCS) requests for GPRS mobile stations (MS). Introduce a new LCS transaction style to the GPRS Connection Management (CM) sublayer of the SGSN to handle LCS requests in parallel with the services offered by GPRS MS Gas. The LCS can multiplex with the existing services of GPRS by assigning a new Service Access Point Identifier (SAPI) to the Logical Link Control (LLC) sublayer of GPRS. Alternatively, a separate protocol discriminator (PD) can be assigned to the LCS when LLCSAPIs supplied between different CM sub-examples or yesterday are used.
