Abstract
A method and apparatus for selecting a communication system in accordance with the geographic region in which the subscriber station is located. Upon successful acquisition, the subscriber station examines the received system identification information to determine its geographical region. The subscriber station then determines whether the acquired system is the most desirable system for use in the geographical region. If it is the most desirable system for use in the geographical region, the subscriber station provides service using the acquired system. If it is not the most desirable system for use in the geographical region, the subscriber station attempts to acquire a more desirable system.

Claim
1. A method for selecting a system for acquisition in a subscriber system, said method comprising the steps of: receiving a system identification (SID) from a central communication station; and determining a geographic region from said received system identification.
2. The method of Claim 1 wherein said step of determining said geographical region comprises determining a set of central communication stations providing service coverage for said geographical region.
3. The method of Claim 2 wherein said step of determining said geographical region comprises the steps of: comparing said received SID to list of SIDs stored in said subscriber station; and identifying said set of central communication stations in accordance with said comparison.
4. The method of Claim 3 wherein said list of SIDs stored in said subscriber station is sequentially ordered in accordance with a set of predefined user preferences.
5. The method of Claim 1 further comprising the steps of: comparing said received SID with a first subset of preferred SIDs from a set of preferred SIDs for said geographic region; and providing service using said central communication station when said received SID is of said first subset of preferred SIDs.
6. The method of Claim 5 further comprising the steps of: selecting an alternative system from said first subset of preferred SIDs; and attempting acquisition upon said alternative system when said received SID is not of said first subset of preferred SIDs.
7. The method of Claim 6 further comprising the step of providing service using said alternative system when said acquisition attempt is successful.
8. The method of Claim 7 further comprising the steps of: selecting a second alternative system from said set of preferred SIDs for said geographic region in accordance with the predetermined selection format when said acquisition attempt is unsuccessful; and attempting to acquire said second alternative system.
9. The method of Claim 1 wherein said step of receiving said SID from said central communication station comprises the steps of: selecting an initial system to acquire; attempting to acquire to said initial system; and receiving said SID from said central communication station when said acquisition attempt is successful
10. Said method of Claim 9 further comprising the steps of: selecting an alternative system upon which to attempt acquisition when said acquisition attempt is unsuccessful; and attempting acquisition upon said alternative system
11. The method of Claim 10 wherein said step of selecting an alternative system upon which to attempt acquisition is determined in accordance with a set of most recently used systems
12. The method of Claim 10 wherein said step of selecting an alternative system upon which to attempt acquisition is determined in accordance with a set of systems which are easily acquired
13. The method of Claim 10 wherein said step of selecting an alternative system upon which to attempt acquisition is determined in accordance with a set of systems which have acquisition parameters common to a plurality of other systems.']
