Abstract  Abstract

(57) Abstract: A method and apparatus for selecting a communication system according to the geographic region in which a subscriber station is located. Upon successful acquisition, the subscriber station examines the received system identification to determine its geographical area. The subscriber station then determines whether the captured system is the most desirable system for use in the geographic area. If it is the most desirable system for use in a geographic area, the subscriber station provides service using the captured system. If it is not the most desirable system for use in the geographic area, the subscriber station will attempt to acquire a more desirable system.
