Abstract  Abstract

Method for controlling transmission power in wireless packet data transfers both in terminal devices and in base stations of a cellular radio system. The control has closed and open loop control characteristics. Before establishing the connection and during long pauses between packets, the terminal device measures the control signal (30, 31) transmitted by the base station and compares its power (R0) with the target level (t0), included in the signal of control as parameter. The base station also reports the transmit power, and the terminal device adjusts (32) its transmit power thereto, corrected for the difference between the target level and the measured link quality (t0-R0). Furthermore, the measured link quality (RXQUAL) is transmitted in packet acknowledgment messages, and the transmitting device changes its transmit power to control the quality down to a certain target level. The major step of change is determined by the length of the packages. For the downlink, the base station uses the maximum power first and corrects its power by the measurement information included in acknowledgment messages transmitted by the terminal device.
