Abstract  Abstract

A data transmission apparatus for a hybrid automatic repeat request communication system that applies a high order modulation scheme having more than two bits per data symbol, said apparatus including: means (130) for applying data bits on a data symbol according to one of a plurality of signal constellation versions of said modulation scheme and one of a plurality of redundancy versions, said redundancy versions being defined by a specific combination of systematic and parity bits generated from an encoder , where each applied data bit of a symbol has an individual bit reliability level defined by said modulation scheme; transmission means (100) for transmitting - in a first transmission, first bits of data applied to a first data symbol using a first combination of a redundancy version and a signal constellation version, and - in a retransmission, all or part of said first data bits applied on a second data symbol using a second combination of a redundancy version and a signal constellation version, said second combination being different from said first combination, such that differences in levels Bit reliability for the respective first data bits is averaged over the first transmission and retransmission, and where individual versions of the constellation of signals of said plurality of constellation versions are independently assigned to said plurality of redundancy versions, respectively.
