A method for transmitting position location signals in a time division multiplexing communications system, the method comprising: generating, in each of a plurality of signal sources (300), a position location slot (250) corresponding that has a plurality of sub-slots (260a, 262a, 264a, 266a, 268a), where each corresponding position location slot has a position location signal corresponding to a signal source in a sub-slot assigned to the signal source; and wherein each of the plurality of signal sources leaves blank slots of the corresponding position location slots to which they are not assigned; transmit in a predetermined slot time, from each of the plurality of signal sources, a corresponding position location slot; in which at least a first sub-slot is assigned a position location signal and at least a second sub-slot different from the first sub-slot contains null data.
