Abstract  Abstract

A method and apparatus for generating and using a reference signal that enables a receiver to receive a position location signal from a relatively weak signal generator when a strong signal source is present. Position location reference signals from multiple sources can be synchronized and occur within scheduled time slots of a time division multiplexing communication system. During the scheduled time slot, each signal source can configure a transmission that includes a media access control address corresponding to the value reserved for the location location signal. Each signal source also configures the transmission to include a position location reference signal corresponding to the signal source. The position location signal from each of the signal sources is positioned to occur at a time within the data portion of the scheduled time slot where the adjacent signal source does not transmit its corresponding position location signal.
