Abstract  Abstract

The image processing apparatus includes a receiver 201 for receiving an image signal including at least an encoded image and a target display reference. The target display reference indicates the dynamic range of the target display that is encoded by the encoded image. The dynamic range processor 203 generates an output image by applying dynamic range conversion to the encoded image according to the target display reference. Thereafter, the output unit 205 outputs an output image signal including the output image to, for example, an appropriate display. The dynamic range conversion may further be performed in response to a display dynamic range indicator received from the display. The present invention can be used, for example, to generate improved high dynamic range (HDR) images from low dynamic range (LDR) images, or vice versa.
