Abstract  Abstract

The image processing apparatus includes a receiver 201 for receiving an image signal including an encoded image. Another receiver 1701 receives from the display a data signal that includes a data field that includes the display dynamic range indicator of display 107. The display dynamic range indicator includes at least one luminance specification for the display. The dynamic range processor 203 generates an output image by applying dynamic range conversion to the encoded image according to the display dynamic range index. The output unit 205 outputs an output image signal including the output image to the display. The transformation may be performed according to a target display reference that indicates the dynamic range of the display that the encoded image is the target for encoding. The present invention may be used, for example, to generate an improved high dynamic range (HDR) image from a low dynamic range (LDR) image, or vice versa.
