Abstract
This disclosure describes techniques for coding transform coefficients for a block of video data. According to these techniques, the video encoder splits the leaf level unit of video data into a plurality of transform coefficient subsets. The video encoder generates, for the subset of the plurality of transform coefficient subsets, a syntax element indicating whether or not the subset includes any nonzero coefficients. In some embodiments, the video encoder may optionally determine whether to generate a syntax element for each subset. The decoder may read an entropy encoded bit stream comprising syntax elements and determine whether to decode the subset based on the syntax elements.
