Abstract  Abstract

Invention Patent: <B> PERCEPTION DEVICE AND WEIGHTING METHOD FOR EFFICIENT CODING OF BROADBAND SIGNS <D>. A perceptual weighting device for producing a perceptually weighted signal in response to a broadband signal comprises a signal pre-emphasis filter, a synthesis filter calculator and a perceptual weighting filter. The signals pre-emphasis filter accentuates the high frequency content of the broadband signal to thereby produce a pre-emphasized signal. The signal pre-emphasis filter has a transfer function of the form P (z) = 1 - Áz ^ -1 ^ where Á is the pre-emphasis factor having a value located between 0 and 1. The synthesis is responsive to the pre-emphasized signal to produce the synthesis filter coefficients. Finally, the perceptual weighting filter processes the pre-emphasized signal in relation to the coefficients of the synthesis filter to produce the perceptually weighted signal. The perceptual weighting filter has a transfer function, with the fixed denominator, of the form W (z) A (z / <sym> ~ 1 ~) / (1 - <sym> ~ 2 ~ z ^ -1 ^) where 0 <<sym> ~ 2 ~ <<sym> ~ 1 ~ <243> 1 and <sym> ~ 2 ~ and <sym> ~ 1 ~ are weighting control values, through which the signal weighting in band broadband in a formant region is substantially decoupled from a spectral slope of this broadband signal.
