Abstract  Abstract

A perceptual weighting device for generating a perceptually weighted signal in response to a broadband signal in order to reduce a difference between a weighted broadband signal and a weighted broadband signal synthesized subsequently, said perceptual weighting device comprising: a) a signal pre-emphasis filter (103) that responds to the broadband signal to reinforce the high frequency content of the broadband signal to thereby generate a pre-emphasized signal (S); b) a synthesis filter calculator (104) that responds to said pre-emphasized signal to generate coefficients (A (z)) of the synthesis filter; and c) a perceptual weighting filter (105), which responds to said pre-emphasized signal (S) and to said coefficients (A (z)) of the synthesis filter, to filter said pre-emphasized signal in relation to said filter coefficients of synthesis to thus generate the perceptually weighted signal (Sw); the perceptual weighting dichofilter having a transfer function with a fixed denominator whereby the weighting of said broadband signal in a forming region is substantially decoupled from a spectral inclination of said broadband signal.
