Abstract  Abstract

(57) Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing an inter-system hard handoff between communication systems (S1, S2) or an inter-frequency hard handoff in a CDMA communication system. It is an object of the present invention to reduce the likelihood of a call dropping during a hard handoff between systems. If the hard handoff attempt fails, the mobile station (18) returns to the original system (S1) with information for the communication system of the present invention to assist in further hard handoff attempts. Alternatively, the mobile station (18) monitors the destination system (S2) without a handoff attempt and returns to the original system (S1) with a service to help with the next handoff attempt. The information returned from the monitor of the CDMA system is applied to one or more pilots assigned to offsets in a specific list provided by the base stations (B1 to B5) to the mobile station (18), or to a predetermined search algorithm. It consists of the result of searching for a set of offsets based on them.
