Abstract  Abstract

The present invention represents a method and apparatus for performing intersystem hard handoff between communication systems S1 and S2 or interfrequency hard handoff within a CDMA communication system. It is an object of the present invention to reduce the likelihood of interruption during a hard handoff between systems. If the hard handoff attempt fails, the mobile station 18 returns to the source system S1 with information that assists the communication system of the present invention in carrying out the future handoff attempt. Optionally, if no handoff has been performed, the mobile station 18 monitors the target system S2 and returns to the source system S1 with information to assist in the next handoff attempt. The information returned from the monitoring of the CDMA system includes the results of the search for one or more pilots given at an offset based on a predetermined search algorithm or an offset of a particular list provided by the base stations B1-B5 to the mobile station 18. .
