In one example, an apparatus for encoding video data determines whether a transform coefficient of a video block is a DC transform coefficient, and if the transform coefficient is determined to be a DC transform coefficient of a video block, the size of the video block A video that is configured to determine a context for encoding the transform coefficient based on the transform coefficient that is a DC transform coefficient and to entropy code the transform coefficient using the determined context.
