Abstract  Abstract

The invention provides a digital transmission system having a transmitter and a
receiver, for transmitting a wideband digital audio signal via a transmission medium. The
transmitter comprises analysis filter means (3) for filtering the wideband digital audio signal
so as to obtain a plurality of sub signals (SSBm), preamplifier means (46.1 to 46.M) for
preamplifying sub signals, quantizer means (48.1 to 48.M) for quantizing preamplified sub
signals and means (27) for applying quantized preamplified sub signals to the transmission
medium. The receiver comprises means (28) for receiving quantized preamplified sub signals
from the transmission medium, dequantizer means for dequantizing quantized preamplified
sub signals, amplifier means (17) for amplifying preamplified sub signals so as to obtain a
replica of the plurality of sub signals and synthesis filter means (21) for combining the
plurality of sub signals so as to obtain a replica of the wideband digital audio signal.
In accordance with the invention, the preamplifier means (46.1 to 46.M) are adapted to
multiply a sub signal with a multiplier value M that has a relationship with 2k.g(p), where k
and p are integers, where g(p) substantially equals
1 for p=0, 1 + 2-2 + 2-8 2-10 + 2-16 + 2-18 + 2-23 for p=1 and 1 + 2-1 + 2-4 + 2-6 + 2-8 + 2-9 + 2-10 + 2-13 + 2-15 + 2-16 + 2-17 + 2-19 + 2-20 for p=2,
the preamplifier means further being adapted to generate an n-bit binary scale factor identifier
signal identifying said multiplier value, the decimal value SF corresponding to the said binary
scale factor identifier signal satisfying the relationship SF = 3k + p, that the amplifier means
(17) are adapted to multiply the preamplified sub signals with a multiplier value M that has a
relationship with 2-k.g(p), where g(p) substantially equals
1 for p=0, 2-1 + 2-2 + 2-5 + 2-6 for p=1 and 2-1 + 2-3 + 2-8 + 2-9 for p=2.
