Abstract  Abstract

A method for controlling the energy consumption in a wireless subscriber unit (10) that communicates using repetitive frames and is capable of having a subscriber loop of varying lengths, the subscriber loop serving a remotely located telephone with respect to the subscriber unit, the method being characterized by: determining a loop length for a subscriber loop to be used; provide a fixed current value to the subscriber loop; select a voltage to feed the subscriber loop based on part of the length of the subscriber loop and on the fixed current value; and feed the subscriber loop with the selected voltage and the fixed current, and keep the fixed current at a substantially constant value regardless of the selected voltage, thus saving energy while maintaining the fixed value of the current, selectively deactivating a plurality of components not identified as required for the operation of the subscriber unit in a given state, said deactivation being carried out during the connection of a call and in successive time frames during the time windows that are not required for the processing operations of the signal.
