Abstract  Abstract

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a circuit for reducing the power consumption of a calling signal generation circuit in a subscriber unit of a time division multiple access (TDMA) radiotelephone system.

SOLUTION: A subscriber unit of a TDMA radiotelephone system is re-constituted in each time slot to implement power consumption tessellation in which circuit components not needed for communication signal processing in that time slot are powered down and other components are powered up. In order to minimize the extent of a circuit that should be provided to distribute power consumption control signals other techniques such as clock frequency control or power down commands are utilized to modify circuit components to be controlled without actually controlling power supply circuits. A programmable call frequency logic controls the frequency of a ring-back tone generator and a high frequency ring-back tone control circuit is switched on and off in accordance with a calling operation. An expansion header is provided to serve as a plurality of subscriber loop circuits with radio equipment for reducing power consumption per subscriber line.
