A method for reducing energy consumption in a wireless subscriber unit (10) that communicates using repetitive frames in which time windows are defined for reception and transmission, and where a plurality of components (11) are used. for the reception and transmission of communications, the method comprising: defining a plurality of operating states for the hung and off-hook telephone conditions, each state depending on which the subscriber unit (10) is unoccupied or communicating using a time window of reception or transmission, including the defined states, a hung-up telephone reception status, an unoccupied hung-up telephone status, a disconnected telephone reception status, a disconnected telephone transmission status, an unoccupied disconnected telephone status and at least one status ringing tone; identify, for each defined operational state, the components (90, 97, 99, 100, 101, 103, 107, 112,116, 117, 130, 141, 150) that are required to be active for each state, varying the components that are requires that they be active according to each state; determine the operating status of the subscriber unit (10) between the defined operating states; and activate the respective components identified for the determined state, and deactivate any other of the plurality of unidentified components, as required for the determined state, said activation and deactivation being carried out during the connection of a call, in accordance with said identification.
