The methods and apparatuses for communicating between an access terminal (AT) and the remote device by means of an access point (AD) are described. For communications over the air link between an AP and AT a short address corresponding to the remote device is used to route packets to/from the remote device. This conserves air link resources. However to communicate between the AD and the remote device a longer address for example a full ip address corresponding to the remote device is used. AT the converts between the long and short addresses as information for example packets are communicated between the remote device and the AT. The long address can be for example an ip address that corresponds to the remote device used to route packets through a tunnel layer 2 between the remote device and the AD. In some embodiments the remote device is a remote access point.
