Abstract  Abstract

An addressing method and apparatus for using airlink resources in an efficient manner is described. Various address types are supported for efficient use of air link resources. The number of bits in the address can vary depending on the type. In one embodiment, the address used for communication over the air link is used to communicate the address type indicator to support a variety of different address types of different lengths. Address type field and optionally an address field used to communicate the address value. The address field is variable length, and for certain types of addresses it may be null, which requires communication with no bits in the field. The four types of addresses that can be supported include i) addresses assisted by access terminals, ii) addresses assisted by networks, 3) pilot PN-based addresses, and 4) reserved addresses.
