Abstract  Abstract

A method and apparatus for communicating between an access terminal (AT) and a remote device via an access point (AP) is described. For communication over the air link, a short address corresponding to the remote device is used between the AP and the AT to route packets to / from the remote device. Thereby, the air link resource is protected. However, communication between the AP and the remote device uses a longer address, such as a complete IP address corresponding to the remote device. The AT translates between long and short addresses when information such as packets is communicated between the remote device and the AT. The long address may be, for example, an IP address corresponding to the remote device used to route packets between the remote device and the AP through a layer 2 tunnel. In some embodiments, the remote device is a remote access point.
