Abstract  Abstract

A method and apparatus for communication between an access terminal (AT) and an access point (AP) is described. For communication over the air link between the AP and the AT, an address based on a PN (Pseudo Random Noise) code is used as an AP identifier, for example an address. The address based on the PN code may be based on a signal based on a pilot PN code received from the AP. Therefore, the AP address based on the PN can be determined from the pilot signal received from the AP. The AP address based on the PN may be a shortened version of the PN code corresponding to the AP, the entire PN code corresponding to the AP, or a value that can be derived by a known method from the PN code corresponding to the AP.
