Abstract  Abstract

A hybrid ARQ retransmission method in a communication system wherein data packets consisting of encoded symbols are retransmitted based on an automatic repeat request. The data packets are combined with previously received data packets either on a symbol-by-symbol or a bit-to-bit basis. The symbols of the retransmitted data packets are modulated in a mapping unit employing a predetermined signal constellation. The bit sequence is modified prior to being input into the mapping entity by an interleaver and a logical bit inverter such that the combined mean bit reliabilities for the respective bits of all transmissions are averaged out.
