METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR PROVIDING BIASING CRITERIA FOR BINARY DECISIONS EMPLOYED BY A USER EQUIPMENT (UE) IN WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS TO ENHANCE PROTECTION

Abstract

According to the present invention, there is provided a user device utilizing a technique of obtaining a criterion for biasing a binary decision requiring uneven protection using the measured signal-to-interference ratio (SIR). The signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) is obtained from the channel estimate. The signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) is compared to a certain threshold, which is selected to bias the decision towards NACK as opposed to the ACK decision. This technique is advantageous in providing bias of binary decision for high speed downlink packet (HSDP), but is available for both uplink and downlink applications. The threshold is small enough to produce an error that is small enough to be acceptable if the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) is greater than or equal to the threshold, and is acceptable if the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) is below the threshold. It is set at a level that is large enough to prevent an infinitely large number of errors.
