Abstract  Abstract

A signal transmission apparatus (1) including: - an error correction code coding (ECC) section (742) for encoding an input signal to produce an ECC encoded signal; - a modulator (4) to assign the ECC encoded signal to produce a modulated signal; - Reverse Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT) means (40) for converting the modulated signal into an IFFT converted signal according to orthogonal frequency division multiplexing; and - a transmitter (5) for transmitting the converted IFFT signal; said input signal containing a first data stream and a second data stream, said ECC encoded signal containing a first ECC encoded data stream, including g values of bit configurations, and a second ECC encoded data stream, where g is an integer, with the signal modulated symbols, each of which represents one of m signal points in a vector space diagram, where m is an integer, the error correction capability to encode the first data stream and the Error correction capabilities to encode the second data stream are set respectively, further including said modulator means (61.67) to divide said m signal points into g groups of signal points, assign the g values of the first data stream ECC encoded to the g groups of signal points respectively, assign data from the second data stream encoded ECC to signal points of each of the g groups pu ntos of signal, select the signal points in the vector space diagram according to said input signal, so that: said m signal points can be distinguished from one another in the vector space diagram by means of a first set of thresholds which divides the vector space diagram into m regions, and the g groups of signal points can be distinguished from each other in the vector space diagram by means of a second set of thresholds that divides the vector space diagram more broadly that the first set of thresholds in g regions, the signal points in each of said groups of signal points are assigned in the vector space diagram at equal intervals along axes I and Q of the vector space diagram, a distance in the vector space diagram between any two closest signal points of any two groups of adjacent signal points is 2 xn, where n is a value of des Placing that is greater than 1, and 2 is the distance in the vector space diagram between the two closest signal points of any two groups of adjacent signal points when the m signal points are assigned in the vector space diagram to equal intervals along axes I and Q of the vector space diagram.
