Abstract  Abstract

Data-optimized communication systems provide support for legacy access terminals, such as access terminals operating under the 1xEV-DO standard. The system also supports MIMO communication with an access terminal configured to support multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO). Multiple MIMO spatial signatures are predefined or negotiated. The identifier of the spatial signature and the MIMO rank determined at the MIMO access terminal are transmitted through the I-branch and Q-branch of the existing 1xEV-DO structure. In one embodiment, the 1 bit rank and 3 bit spatial signature are transmitted as 4 bit symbols on the I-branch, instead of the data rate control (DRC) channel. In another embodiment, a four bit spatial signature is transmitted over the I-branch in addition to the DRC channel. A two bit rank is transmitted with the four bit DRC channel over the Q-branch. Two bit ranks and DRC channels can be distinguished because they are transmitted using different orthogonal codeword Walsh covers.
