Abstract  Abstract

The access terminal (AT) and data-optimized cellular communication wireless network (RN) negotiate a set of packet sizes for use on the reverse link between the AT and the RN. The negotiated set of packet sizes is different from the default set of packet sizes defined in conventional standards such as 1xEV-DO revisions A and B. The negotiated set of packet sizes may be customized to provide good fit for applications transmitting data on the reverse link, such as voice encoders in Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) applications. The AT and RN communicate using a negotiated set of packet sizes. The negotiated set of packet sizes may be mapped to the same reverse rate indicator (RRI) channel codewords, as defined in a system operating under the standard. Thus, packing efficiency is increased and higher capacity is achieved for delay-sensitive applications.
