Abstract  Abstract

Methods and devices in which unlicensed spectrum is used for Long Term Evolution (LTE) communications are described. The first method comprises performing a clear channel assessment (CCA) to determine the availability of the unlicensed spectrum; Sending a request-to-send (RTS) signal to a set of user equipments (UEs) using an unlicensed spectrum when a determination is made that an unlicensed spectrum is available; And receiving a common clear-to-send (CTS) signal and an individual CTS signal from one or more of the UEs in response to the RTS signal in the unlicensed spectrum. The second method includes sending an RTS signal addressed to a set of UEs in an unlicensed spectrum or in a V-RTS signal in an authorized spectrum; And transmitting the CTS-to-self signal in the unlicensed spectrum, with transmission of the V-RTS signal.
