Abstract  Abstract

The data of the transport block set will be transmitted in the wireless communication system. The wireless communication system (FIG. 5) uses adaptive modulation and coding (34) and has a physical layer hybrid automatic repeat request mechanism (40). Segmentation information for possible segmentation of the transport block set is provided (46). A transport block set is transmitted using a first specified modulation and coding scheme. A transport block set is received (38) and it is determined whether the received transport block set meets the specified quality. If the specified quality is not met, a retransmission request (40) is transmitted. The first designated modulation and coding set is changed to the second designated modulation and coding set. In response to the retransmission request, the transmission block set is segmented (48) into a plurality of segments supported by the second specified modulation and coding set (34) according to the provided segmentation information. The segments are transmitted and at least two segments are transmitted separately. The transmitted segment is received (38). The segmentation process may be applied multiple times for a particular TBS transmission.
