A method and apparatus are provided for establishing an access channel in a wireless communication system comprising receiving an AccessGrant on the carrier to which the last probe was sent and terminating the access probe transmission upon receiving the AccessGrant. A method and apparatus are further provided comprising determining an expiration of an access grant timer and terminating the access probe transmission upon expiration of the timer. A method and apparatus are further provided comprising receiving an IdleState.IdleHO indication and terminating the access probe transmission upon receiving an IdleState.IdleHO indication. A method and apparatus are further provided comprising receiving a new AttemptAccess command processed after the current probe transmission ends and terminating the access probe transmission upon receiving the new AttemptAccess command.
