A user equipment for use in a spread spectrum communication system the user equipment for receiving a data signal transmitted from a plurality of transmitting antennas (48 50 52) of a single base station each of the plurality of antennas (48 50 52) transmitting a different first signal the user equipment comprising a receiving antenna (80) and characterized by comprising:
* means (82 84 86) coupled to the receiving antenna (80) for filtering the received first signals using pseudo random chip code sequences associated with the first signals and weighting each filtered first signal by a particular weight;
* means (94 96 98 88 90 92) for combining the weighted first signals to produce a combined signal and adaptively adjusting each of the first signals particular weight based on in part a signal quality of the combined signal; and
* means (100 102 104 106 108 110 112) for receiving each transmitting antennas version of the data signal and filtering each version with its associate chip code and combining the filtered versions to recover data.
