Abstract  Abstract

(PROBLEMS) To further improve the quality of a received signal without increasing the transmission power level in a code division multiple access (CDMA) communication system. The present invention provides data signal transmission / reception using a plurality of transmission antennas. Each antenna transmits a unique pilot signal having a unique pseudo-random chip code sequence. The receiver filters the transmitted pilot signal using a chip code sequence of the pilot signal. The filtered pilot signal is weighted and combined. The weight to each pilot signal is adaptively adjusted based in part on the signal quality of the combined signal. Data signals are transmitted such that different spread spectrum outputs of the data signals are transmitted from a plurality of transmitting antennas. Each of the spread spectrum outputs has a different chip code identifier. On the receiving side, each of the spread spectrum outputs is filtered with an associated chip code sequence. The filtered spread spectrum output is weighted according to the adjusted weight associated with the pilot signal of each antenna.
