Abstract  Abstract

A method for use in a distributed spectrum communication system having a plurality of transmission antennas (48-52), the method comprising the steps of: transmitting from each transmission antenna (48-52) a pilot signal having a pseudo-random chip code sequence, uniquely associated with that antenna (48-52); receive in the receiver all of said transmitted pilot signals; filter each of said transmitted pilot signals, with the use of that pseudo-random chip code sequence of the pilot signal; characterized by: weighing each of said filtered pilot signals with a particular weighting factor; combining said weighted pilot signals to obtain a combined signal; adaptively adjust each of said particular weighting factors of the pilot signal, based, in part, on a signal quality of the combined signal; transmitting a data signal such that different versions of distributed spectrum of the data signal are transmitted from each antenna (48-52), each version having a different chip code identifier for the respective transmission antenna (48-52) ; and receive the data signal through the filtering of each version with the associated chip code, and combine the filtered versions, so that the different versions of the data signal are weighted according to the adjusted weighting factors that are associated with the pilot signal of the respective antenna (48-52).
