An apparatus and method for acknowledging a transition to a SelectedInterlacesOff state in a wireless communication system is described. A SelectedInterlaceAck message, indicating an 8-bit MessageID field, a 12-bit PilotPN field set in the PilotPN of the sector to which the message is directed, and set to “1” to indicate that the selected interlace mode is enabled, A 1-bit SelectedInterlaceEnabled field set to “0” if the selected interlace mode is not enabled, and a 3-bit set to “0” that is long enough to align the entire message with octets.
