A method and apparatus of controlling tune away operations, the method comprising generating TuneAwayRequest message comprising a 8 bit Message ID field, a 16 bit MessageSequence field, a TuneAwayEnabledMap field of NCSPTuneAwayMaxSched bits, a 3 bit NumPilots, a 3 bit ActiveSetIndex field, a 24 bit SectorOffset field and a variable bit Reserved field. The MessageSequence field is set to the sequence number of the message and is 1 more than the sequence number of the last TuneAwayRequest message, the NumPilots field is set to the number of pilots included in the message, the ActiveSetIndex field identifies Active Set members, as indexed in the ActiveSetAssignment message of the Active Set Management Protocol and the SectorOffset field is set to the time, in units of 1 microsecond, thata terminal adds to the StartSuperframeOffset attribute when this Active Set member is the serving sector.
