A code division multiple access (CDMA) subscriber unit comprising an antenna configured to receive a radio frequency signal that is a combination of a first transmitted and second transmitted radio frequency signals wherein the first transmitted radio frequency signal carries information that is spread coded in accordance with a first spreading code segment during a first time interval and the second transmitted radio frequency signal carries information that is spread coded in accordance with a second spreading code segment during a second time interval non-overlapping with the first time interval the second spreading code segment being different than the first spreading code segment; and a circuit operatively coupled to the receiver configured to process the received radio frequency signal and output a frequency hopped signal carrying the information.
