Abstract  Abstract

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a communication system that utilizes time/space diversity.

SOLUTION: A data packet which carries traffic is transmitted at different times from different antennas. A mobile station receives the data packet at different times from different antennas and uses the best data packet or the combination of the data packets to reduce the effects of fading. A transfer station forms data packet repeats at spatially diverse antennas locations. The transfer station also modulates a CDMA system using a TDMA signal which links the mobile station subscriber to the transfer station. Therefore each data packet is transmitted at different times to the mobile station subscriber station via a CDMA link. In one embodiment each transfer station includes three space diversity antennas. In a second embodiment three transfer stations each having one spatially diverse antenna are used.
